Burnout: What is it?

Burnout is a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion, often caused by prolonged and excessive stress. It typically results from an imbalance between the demands placed on an individual and their capacity to cope with those demands.

Key characteristics of burnout include:

  • Emotional Exhaustion: Feeling drained, overwhelmed, and emotionally depleted, making it difficult to engage in or find joy in daily activities.
  • Depersonalization: Developing a sense of detachment or cynicism towards work or personal responsibilities. Individuals may start to feel disconnected from their roles and the people around them.
  • Reduced Personal Accomplishment: A diminished sense of achievement or competence, often leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.
  • Physical Symptoms: Persistent fatigue, headaches, sleep disturbances, and other health issues can manifest due to chronic stress.
  • Mental Health Impact: Burnout can contribute to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

Burnout often arises in high-pressure environments, such as demanding jobs or caregiving roles, but it can affect anyone facing prolonged stress.
